Long Yard (currently at Bendall Mews)

Formerly known as the Crisis Centre, Foundation66 Long Yard provides residential alcohol detoxification in the centre of London.

What we do

Long Yard is a unique 13-bedded scheme which provides a full crisis intervention service for those who misuse alcohol.

Many of our clients, for a variety of reasons, need a place of safety for stabilisation, a full assessment and withdrawal from alcohol as part of an overall care package.

Long Yard provides 24 hour staff cover, with one waking and one sleep-in staff during the night hours.

The Long Yard program is delivered within a care home setting, with a visiting GP providing base line medical assessment on admission and ongoing support with underlying medical issues.

In addition to this there is an in house Health Practitioner leading the health promotion aspect of the programme.

Who we help

Clients suitable for Long Yard are those with a dependent relationship with alcohol. By dependency we mean loss of control over drinking alcohol and arguably the process of withdrawal. It is seen as a means of getting choice back, in respect of all aspects of a client's life. We see our duty as aiding to make those choices better informed, whatever they may be.

How we work

We follow the traditional line of seeing the crisis as the potential for change in an individual.   Specific Programme for Alcohol Withdrawal Management Every potential admission will go through the following stages:

  •  An assessment of needs
  • Foundation66 staff liaise with specialist medical services known to the client ensure appropriate care and assessment of risk with the clients permission.
  •  A GP medical assessment will be offered on admission.
  • We take a detailed history of the client, including social, family, legal, health and other associated factors.
  • We will complete all necessary paperwork for admission and liaise with Social Services on the funding of future placements.
  • each  client will be supported in their withdrawal using the following medication, Librium, Hemineverin and Thiamine as appropriate
  • Every client will have an allocated keyworker.
  • The environment offered at Foundation66 Long Yard is safe and supportive.  Setting is as non-medical as possible and concentrates on plenty of human contact involving both staff and other clients in residence.
  • Emphasis is placed on the first 3 days on the client being able to sleep sufficiently and to attend to long-standing hygiene neglect and mix socially.

The treatment programme on offer

The main focus of the programme is to help stabilise and contain anxieties whilst also providing a safe outlet for some of the emotional pain experienced at this time. A comprehensive groupwork programme is provided which has been designed to enable each resident to begin the process of looking at their alcohol misuse in an honest and objective way.  This includes Relapse and Risk Prevention, Women / Men’s Groups, Video Topic Group, House Group, Alcohol Awareness, Dramatherapy and Health Promotion.  All the groups are run in a non-judgemental way, promoting a safe environment where members are encouraged to participate.  The boundaries are made clear and equal opportunities and non-discrimination policies and practices must be adhered to.  Staff are trained to use motivational interviewing and brief solution techniques and to work within the Cycle of Change.  Clients’ progress is monitored against an individual care plan, using clear milestones and outcomes.

The three main treatment outcomes are:

  • Stabilisation
  • withdrawal from alcohol
  • Referral on to further treatment options.
