New Roots

new roots at trelleckNew Roots is a community-based  alcohol and drug service which provides specialist support for individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. We work with individuals and their loved ones who requrie support to address drug or alcohol issues. New Roots serves residents of the London Boroughs of Camden and Kensington & Chelsea as well as the City of Westminster.

  

What We Do

New Roots provides:

  • One-to-one counselling support for individuals in health and community spaces 
  • Open access drop-in services providing advice and information
  • Harm reduction workshops
  • Free alternative therapy sessions including acupuncture

At New Roots we also: 

  • Raise awareness by providing free workshops on alcohol and drugs for community groups
  • Work in partnership with other alcohol and drug agencies to support the delivery of services to clients from BME communities
  • Attend community events, where we offer advice and information in a range of community languages
  • Conduct outreach to engage with clients and to network with community groups and organizations working with the BME communities. 
  • Increase the communities knowledge on accessing appropriate treatment services
  • Conduct specialist research on substance use including: 
    • Crack use among the BME communities in Westminster.
    • Khat use among the East African communities in Kensington & Chelsea.

  

Who We Help

  • Adults (18 and over) from Black & Minority Ethnic communities.
  • Residents of Camden, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster.
  • Those with problem alcohol and drug use

 

How We Work

new roots outreach flyerNew Roots is a free and confidential service which gives support to those using drugs and alcohol as well as carers or significant others. Clients can be seen in community settings. New Roots offers home and hospital visits to engage clients into treatment.

New Roots work with clients ranges from advice and information, brief interventions where clients will be seen for approximately 4 sessions. Also, triage assessments to support clients accessing support from another service and structured treatment where clients will be given a care plan with clear goals.

New Roots uses interventions such as the cycle of change, motivational interviewing techniques and cognitive behavioural approaches to support the client make the necessary changes to their lives.

New Roots incorporates the above models within a culturally sensitive framework, taking into account the clients cultural traditions and religious beliefs.
