Country music legend Alan Jackson has been battling Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a genetic neurological disorder that has a major effect on the peripheral nervous system, in private for more than ten years. Unquestionably, this uncommon illness has impacted Jackson’s capacity to function at the level he once did by harming the nerves that regulate movement and balance. Instead of avoiding the spotlight, Jackson has been incredibly open about his difficulties, giving fans a unique glimpse into the difficulties of juggling a career and a chronic illness.

A genetic disorder called CMT causes muscles, especially those in the hands, feet, and legs, to gradually weaken and atrophy. Although Jackson discovered his diagnosis in 2011, he didn’t make it public until 2021. He clarified that the illness had started to affect his performances at that point, stating that he had trouble moving and maintaining his balance on stage. Jackson acknowledged, “It’s getting more and more obvious,” alluding to his inability to keep up his customary stage presence. However, he also underlined that CMT only makes mobility and balance increasingly difficult; it is not lethal.

For fans who have followed his career for decades, his 2022 “Last Call: One More for the Road” tour is a bittersweet farewell. “I don’t know how much I’ll continue to tour,” he said, but he also added, “I’ve had a wonderful, beautiful life.” He made it clear that his health was the reason behind the decision to cut back on his touring schedule.

Despite the fact that CMT is a progressive illness, Jackson has handled it gracefully, revealing that supportive therapies have assisted him in controlling his symptoms. He has been able to continue performing at a few locations thanks to braces, occupational therapy, and regular physical therapy. Jackson’s tenacity is actually demonstrated by his recent appearance at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2025, where he was given a lifetime achievement award.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease has no known cure, but there are therapies that can lessen symptoms and slow the disease’s progression. Jackson has advocated for people who might be fighting the same illness in silence by using his position to spread knowledge about it. Jackson’s candor has served as motivation for those dealing with comparable difficulties, demonstrating that success is still achievable despite hardship.

Although it’s obvious that Alan Jackson’s health has had a big influence on his decision to cut back on his career, he hasn’t let that stop him from giving it his all. Jackson’s legacy—one based on decades of outstanding music, an unwavering work ethic, and an openness to sharing both the highs and lows of life—remains intact as he approaches the conclusion of his farewell tour.
